Career Assessments at Project Restart

At Project Restart, you will be given 6 assessments looking at your interests, abilities, values, and personality. This process will increase your self-understanding and lead to an informed career decision and an increased ability to market yourself in your job search. Many of the assessments will generate lists of occupations, presenting new possibilities for your career.

Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI)

The MBTI, the most widely used personality assessment in the world, measures personality on four dimensions. It will give you information about your preferences in the workplace, and will generate a list of careers to consider.

Strong Interest Inventory

The Strong Interest Inventory will assist you to translate your interests into potential career options by comparing how closely your likes and dislikes match those of satisfied workers in 122 occupations. At Project Restart we use the most up to date version of the Strong, revised in 2004.

True Colors

The True Colors is a fun and interactive personality assessment that will teach you about your preferences, strengths and weaknesses and help you get to know others in your career planning group. It will also generate a list of careers that may be suitable for your personality.

Career Ability Placement Survey (CAPS)

The CAPS will help you determine your relative strengths and weaknesses on 8 key areas of ability. It will help you identify a broader range of career choices while targeting areas that need to be strengthened in order to achieve your career goals.

Transferable Skills

This assessment will help you take a look at your workplace-related skills, both in terms of how good you are and in terms of which skills you would most like to use in your next job. Knowing your top transferable skills will help you choose a career, be more effective in resume writing and interviewing, and avoid taking jobs that use skills that you don't enjoy.

Work Values

A values conflict will make you miserable on the job. This exercise will help you pinpoint what is most important for you to have in your work and what you need to avoid.

Workshops

Effective Interview Preparation

This workshop will help you gain confidence and prepare for job interviews by teaching you the keys to answering some of the most common interview questions, as well as information to help you present yourself effectively. You will have two opportunities to practice interviewing and receive feedback in a safe, supportive environment.

What Employers Look For

We will give you information from Business Council of BC surveys to help you understand what local employers are looking for. This will help you identify what strengths to emphasize in your resume and interviews, as well as target skills for improvement.

Networking

According to Statistics Canada, 64% of unemployed Canadians found employment in 2004 through networking. This workshop will help you realize that networking isn't as scary as it seems and that you know more people than you think. We will use the power of the group to help you gain contacts for information about careers.

Self-Esteem

Increased self-esteem will make it easier to take positive steps toward your career and to market yourself for a job. You will learn about factors contributing to positive and negative self-esteem and steps you can take towards a more positive self-image. The positive group interaction will often enhance self-esteem in itself.

Emotional Intelligence

Together with intellectual ability, success in the workplace often depends on being aware of your emotions and interacting positively with coworkers. This workshop will help make you aware of attitudes and behaviours that contribute to career success.

Resumes and Cover Letters

This workshop will teach you how to most effectively present your skills on paper for the current Canadian marketplace. We also offer individual assistance in writing resumes and cover letters.

The best information to help you decide on a new career comes from people already in that career. This workshop will help you find these people and give you an idea of how to approach them and what to ask them.
